Mentoring
I consider mentoring the next generation of geoscientists to be one of the most important components of my job. In 2020, I, along with several other undergraduate and graduate students in UCSB's Earth science department established the Geoscience Enrichment and Mentoring for Students by Students (GEMSS) program. The core of GEMSS is a peer mentoring program where undergraduate students are paired with graduate student mentees. If you are interested in learning more about GEMSS, please email [email protected].
Last academic year, I mentored UCSB undergraduate student Michelle Chambers (pictured, left) on a senior thesis project investigating the mechanisms of lower continental crust formation. Michelle analyzed detrital zircons from a transect of metamorphosed sedimentary rocks in the Ivrea Zone, Italian Alps, to determine how sediments become incorporated into the lower continental crust. Michelle will be a co-author on the manuscript that integrates our detrital zircon datasets.
